TRISH FRAUNFELTER

Eastbourne Art

A lways drawing , it was inevitable that my first job was in the advertising department of David Jones, then Grace Brothers advertising. This experience was akin to going to the university of advertising where all aspects of design, illustration, retouching, production & print media was practiced everyday. I was now a commercial artist, studying at night at East Sydney Tech ( The National Art School) where I graduated in Fine Arts. A year or so away in London followed.

Back home in Sydney I worked for a number of Advertising agencies and as one of the first female art directors worked on some of the more influential campaigns of the time. However, in the 70’s, the glass ceiling existed and impossible to break through. A business opportunity presented, I took my savings, not ever having screen printed & created a new business under my parent’s house. Two weeks later I was asked to print t-shirts for the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.  I learned very quickly the difference between artistic endeavour and business practices.

I have been involved in commercial screen printing, the design & creation of three dimensional textile wall hangings, large & small for office foyers in the CBD. Then a course in stained glass led to commissions, teaching and conducting regional NSW weekend workshops. Teaching was a wonderful way for me to learn as my students had problems for which I had to find solutions.

Currently I am immersed in illustration, design & the making of a bespoke range of Homewares & Wearables that is Eastbourne Art. Fabric, design & colour reflect the environment I work in choosing to use tactile furnishing fabrics, natural linens, cotton & canvas drill. Everything is made to order & hand printed using traditional artisan screen printing practices.

I enjoy the challenges presented everyday, working towards the next range, finding new fabrics and creating items to print. While I strive to bring new illustrations, prints, colours and new items to each season, the styles are minimalist, timeless and designed to be enjoyed for more than one season.

Always reminding myself that I am only as good as what I do next in this ever changing industry.

Eastbourne Art can be seen in the National Gallery Shop in Canberra and in many rural & regional boutiques & galleries.
